Make an invoice without an accounting app
Freelancers, small shops and anyone selling something occasionally need to send a proper invoice, but signing up for invoicing software for a handful of bills is overkill. This generator gives you a clean, professional PDF in a minute. Enter your business details and your customer's, add the line items, and the totals update as you type. Press Create PDF and the invoice is built in your browser with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library served by this site. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored, which also means you should keep a copy of each PDF for your records.
How the totals are calculated
Each line amount is quantity multiplied by unit price, rounded to cents. The subtotal is the sum of the lines. A percentage discount is applied to the subtotal first, then tax or VAT is calculated on the discounted amount, which is how most tax authorities expect it to be shown. Shipping is added last and is not taxed here; if shipping is taxable where you are, add it as a normal line item instead. Every figure appears on the PDF, so your customer can check the arithmetic.
What to include on an invoice
- A unique invoice number. Many businesses use a prefix and a sequence, such as INV-1001, INV-1002.
- The invoice date and a due date, so it is clear when payment is expected.
- Your business name and contact details, and your customer's legal name and address.
- A clear description of each item or service, with quantity and price.
- Tax details required in your country, such as a VAT or GST number, which you can add in the From box or notes.
- Payment instructions: bank details, accepted methods and terms.
Currencies and formatting
Choose a currency symbol from the list. Amounts use two decimals and thousands separators. Symbols such as $, €, £ and ₹ print beside the number, while letter codes like AED appear with a space. The layout fits A4 or US Letter and adds pages automatically if you have many line items.
