How the tip is calculated
A tip is a percentage of the bill. Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100, then add the result to the bill to get the total. On a bill of 85.50 with an 18% tip, the tip is 85.50 × 0.18 = 15.39 and the total is 100.89. When several people share, the total is divided by the number of people. This calculator works in whole cents internally to avoid the rounding drift that can happen with decimals, and it rounds each person's share up to the next cent so that the group always covers the full total.
Which tip percentage should you choose?
Customs differ by country, so there is no single correct answer. In the United States, tipping 15% to 20% for table service is widely regarded as normal, with higher amounts for exceptional service. In the United Kingdom, a discretionary service charge of around 10% to 12.5% is common in restaurants, and it is often already added to the bill. In many other countries, tipping is optional or small. Check your bill first, because if a service charge is already included, an extra tip may not be expected. The quick buttons here cover the most common choices, and you can type any value.
Before or after tax?
Some people tip on the pre-tax amount, others on the total including tax. Both are acceptable, and the difference is small. To tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal as the bill amount. To tip on the full amount, enter the final total on the receipt. Either way, the number you enter is the amount the percentage is applied to.
Splitting the bill fairly
- Even split: set the number of people and each pays the same share. This is simplest when everyone ordered similar amounts.
- Round up for convenience: tick the box and each share is rounded up to a whole currency unit. The group then leaves a slightly larger tip, which is easier when paying with cash. The tip figure on the result updates to show the real total tip.
- Uneven orders: if people ordered very different amounts, calculate each person's own bill with this tool using one person at a time.
Good to know
The currency selector only changes the symbol shown. The arithmetic is identical for dollars, pounds, euros or any other currency. Tipping is personal, and this calculator only does the arithmetic. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere, and you can use the tool offline once the page has loaded.
